A Tale of One Mans Journey
About Billyjacks Wild America
How a Simple Fishing Adventure became BJWA
It was a bright sunny day, with some big white fluffy clouds rolling around the sky, and a warm watery fresh breeze whirling around us. Four friends unloading fishing gear out of our old trucks (now near vintage) at lake Choke Canyon. We were off the old 99 road boat launch, the original road now travels through the bottom of the lake. Having one the first mobile phones that had a camera and allowed you to film video, listen to the FM radio, put in a micro SD card and send AOL instant messenger messages (during this time period texting wasn’t a “thing”). It was a pretty cool flip phone with a nice color screen that when closed resembled an iPod classic control layout.
While walking around the lake edge over boggy marshes, rocky paths, wet sinking sand and fresh water shell lined shorelines to our fishing spot. We encountered so many different kinds of wildlife. Beautiful blue herons, creepy alligators, and timid turtles, all kinds of birds chirping and flying away as we passed through their hangouts. My friends and I were joking and rambling on about many different nothings of any importance. I decided to whip out my phone and make some videos of our adventures. It reminded me of when Keith and Allen Warren had their outdoor show and would visit the lake, although my first video that was about to be recorded strayed drastically away from any professional outdoor shows format and material. It was a fun thing to film whatever I wanted with my own format. In these days there was no YouTube or Dlive platforms, just the good ol file transfer in AOL or MSN instant messenger.
After college I got a job that shipped my out to various places across the country and I was stationed in New Mexico for a number of years. Many of BJWA’s first adventures have taken place at these locations. A vast number of friends came to be along the way and several unexpected discoveries came about. A greater appreciation for the world and the variety of cultures and micro cultures encountered along the way. It is amazing that there is such hospitality in the world around us as you may not expect.
Billyjack’s Wild America’s goal is to promote adventures, exploration, hobbies and cool things in general that everyone can enjoy! Also, that will be an outlet for people to experience things they might not have the ability or accessibility to participate in such activities. Spreading education and good times is something everyone can take part in as we share our experiences.
So you if you have an adventurous thought, you might just be able to take that first step of your adventure!
